Satellite Tracking I

This program provides students with practical, hands-on opportunities to learn fundamental techniques related to tracking satellites. In preparation for satellite tracking, students earn their Federal Communications Commission’s Technician Class license, which enables them to transmit and receive signals on a limited range of frequency bands. After the students receive their FCC Technician Class licenses, they are each issued a feature-rich, three-band VHF/UHF hand-held transceiver, as well as a VHF/UHF satellite-tracking antenna. Students then assemble their antennas and use their communications equipment to track satellites at any time and from any place. The program culminates with hands-on training on VCS’s satellite tracking station.

Students will achieve the following:
  • Learn FCC rules and regulations for proper radio operation on HF, VHF, and UHF
  • Understand and apply basic electronic fundamentals like Ohm’s Law
  • Learn fundamentals about radio propagation
  • Master the basic functions required to operate the high school’s satellitetracking station equipment
  • Successfully communicate via radio on HF, VHF, and UHF bands
