Astronomy Research Program

The Astronomy Research Program provides AMSE students with practical, hands-on opportunities to learn about the exciting world of astronomy.  With the equipment in VCHS’s observatory, students have access to professional-grade hardware and software such as the Schmidt-Cassagrain telescope, through which they can view planets, stars, star clusters, nebula, the sun’s sunspots and other active solar events. They also have the incredible opportunity to document their observations via astrophotography and astrovideography.

Students will achieve the following:

  • Understand the basic types of telescopes, finder scopes, and compute field of view
  • Calculate telescope magnification
  • Control the telescope and the observatory dome via computer
  • Capture high quality astrophotography and astrovideography
  • Explore what God has revealed through His creation by studying objects in the sky

Equipment & Software:

  • Celestron Model CPC 925 XLT 9.25” Schmidt-Cassagrain Telescope
